Through donations and proceeds of the Senoia Jeep Fest, Senoia Masonic Lodge #82 is offering assistance to families, who would otherwise not be financially able to, send their Scouts to camp.
Roger ‘RT’ Williams served as Scoutmaster for Troop 848 in the Greater Atlanta Council of Boy Scouts of America in the early 1980’s. ‘RT’ made an immense impact on the lives of a handful of young Scouts by imparting the lessons of Scouting and through that, the lessons of Freemasonry as many of the ideals of Scouting were derived from Freemasonry as Lord Baden Powell, himself, was a Freemason. Unfortunately, RT’s life was cut short due to an automobile accident. But, his legacy lives on. The Scouts of Troop 848 grew up to be successful men in their own right. One of those Scouts, Russ Sanders, became a Mason in Lanett Lodge #656 in 2013, later moved to the Senoia, Ga area, and affiliated with Senoia Lodge #82 in 2015. Russ has always wanted to have an avenue for helping Scouts go to camp and experience the same fellowship, fun, and learning that he did as a boy even if their parent’s couldn’t provide that on their own.
In 2019, Senoia Lodge started the Senoia Jeep Fest to raise money for charitable organizations in our area and state. Once the Fest became more profitable, Russ proposed the scholarship program to the lodge to use some of the proceeds from the festival. Russ told the story of his childhood Scoutmaster that he had recently found out that RT had been a Mason as well as a Shriner. The lodge then voted unanimously to start the Scholarship program. The first year of the program we assisted two scouts in their summer camp fees and two more with fees for NYLT.
